Everything this site claims can be checked. The effect, the model and the critical value are all published, and the papers are below.

Five cited works are placed on a timeline from 1910 to 2030.
When the things this site depends on were published, and how long ago that was.

The seed is printed on the wire page and the mapping is printed on the field page. With those two things and the algorithm on the method page, the entire history of this site can be reconstructed by anyone from the sequence of market caps alone.

The market cap readings come from a public source that anyone can query directly. They are the only input this site has and the only thing on it that has to be taken on trust.

The model in these papers was written for magnets. It has since been used for earthquakes, for fracture, for crumpling paper and for anything else that responds to smooth pressure in discontinuous jumps. Using it for a market cap is our idea, not theirs, and it is the only part of this site with no citation behind it.

The papers are worth reading in their own right, particularly the 2001 one, which is a short and readable account of why so many different things crackle in the same way. None of it was written with anything like this in mind.

Nothing cited here is from this decade. The newest paper is from 2001 and the oldest is from 1919.
